What is Homestay?

Homestay means that you will live in a house with the owner and family. Available to all MPW students on full-time courses, homestay is an ideal option for international students who want to learn about British lifestyle and culture up close through living with a local family and practice English language skills in a safe and supportive environment. All homestay families are carefully selected for their friendly, helpful attitudes and comfortable homes. Many homestays have many years’ experience of welcoming students into their homes.

The nature of the home and the family will vary as England is a diverse nation, but all homestay homes will be safe, clean and close to public transportation. Students will be able to practice their English in conversations with their host during shared time in the home.

Benefits of living in Homestay

Moving to a new destination with unfamiliar surroundings can be daunting and it may take time to adjust. Stay in a homestay and you will be able to meet some local people straightaway which could help make you feel more comfortable and secure and help you settle in more quickly. In addition, you will get to communicate in English every day with your host family in a domestic setting. Use the opportunity to practice your English, ask questions about homework and undertake everyday activities with your host family. Living with a British family is the best way to learn about the British way of life. Ask about their customs and beliefs; notice how they do things; be part of the family; even offer to help in the kitchen.

Your host family may also have a lot of local knowledge and insight that they can share with you, such as how to get a bank account and how to use the public transport system and local community facilities. Such local knowledge is extremely helpful in getting the most from your stay. Furthermore, many hosts are delighted to show their guests around their local area, providing them with invaluable insights which a guide book would never offer.

Last but not least, by living with a host family, you will be building the relationships that can lead to career opportunities, chances to travel, life-long friendships and connections abroad!

What facilities are provided in Homestay accommodation?

You will be provided with:

  • A private bedroom: includes linens, bed, desk & lamp, and a place for clothing.
  • A private or shared bathroom: includes towels.
  • Meals (continental breakfast & dinner) if purchased, or, kitchen privileges to prepare meals. Lunch and snacks are not included

House rules

Because this is someone's private home, students will be expected to abide by the same reasonable rules of behaviour that family members follow. When you arrive, normally your homestay will discuss any house rules and this helps to avoid any misunderstandings. Some typical rules may be about not smoking in the house or what time you need to be home at night. The homestay agency and the family set these rules. Please make certain that you understand these rules which are available for you when you check-in.

Jessica, Taiwan
Tracey is really nice. She asks about my school life every day, and my social life as well. She remembers my personal habits and cares about what I like to eat and what I don’t. We often have Chinese food and she takes me out for dinner on weekends as well.
Johnny, South Korea
They are easy to talk to. When I first arrived here everything was awkward but it did not last that long to be honest. They are friendly and it almost feels like I have lived here for years.
Mark, UK
They were very welcoming when I first arrived and made me feel at home. Since then, they have cooked for me every night and washed my clothes every week which has allowed me to enjoy my year in Cambridge.
Alina, Kazakhstan
I feel like I am part of the family as my host family always shows interest by asking about my day and having friendly and polite conversations. Helen also helps me with room cleaning.
